Increase in number of hours of part-time work international students can do during the school year
Published: Oct 7, 2022
Currently, people who are in Canada under a study permit may work up to 40 hours a week during school breaks without the need to apply for a separate work permit. They are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week off campus while class is in session.
From November 15, 2022 until December 31, 2023, international students who are in Canada and have off campus work authorization on their study permit, will not be restricted by the 20 hour per week limit.
Let me add a rare personal note. It is unwise for an international student to work so many hours. Most successful Express Entry applications nowadays are from international students who, upon graduation, have worked for year under a post-graduate work permit. The key to becoming a permanent resident is to first graduate from a Canadian university or college in a program that is two, three, or more years in length. Working even 20 hours a week part-time during the school year significantly reduces your chance of graduating. Concentrate on finishing your degree or diploma, not on earning a few extra dollars working part-time.
