More Work Permits for family members of Temporary Foreign Workers (?)

Published: Dec 9, 2022

On December 2, 2022 the Minister of Immigration announced that starting in January, 2023, through a temporary two year measure, Canada will expand eligibility to work in this country to spouses and working-age children of some temporary foreign workers. The government will expand the right of family members to work in Canada in a three stage process. The first stage will give additional rights to family members of workers coming to Canada under the high-wage stream and those coming under the International Mobility Program. The second stage will expand the measure to family members of workers coming to Canada under the low-wage stream. The third stage will "include consultation" with the feasibility of expanding the measure to family members of agricultural workers.

Like so much that Immigration is doing nowadays, the Minister makes an announcement but does not tell us what the new rules are going to be. No one should change their plans based on this announcement. Everything is still very hypothetical and up in the air. Please keep an eye on Immigration's web site, though, to see if stages 1 and 2 of this new measure are actually put in place.
